Présentation

The SMAD (Syndicat Mixte d’Aménagement et de Développement) is responsible for managing several environmentally sensitive sites, including marinas, hiking trails, and beaches. As part of its mission, the SMAD needed to assess the impact of human traffic on wildlife and the environment, particularly along a major pathway crossing a fragile natural area. The primary objective was to quantify visitor flow to determine whether access restrictions were necessary to protect the ecosystem. Making a decision without accurate data could have resulted in unnecessary investments or, conversely, left a vulnerable site without proper conservation measures.

Prestation kiomda

Kiomda provided an autonomous and non-intrusive metering solution, allowing rapid installation and accurate monitoring of site attendance. Our service included the supply and installation of a meter adapted to sensitive natural areas, with a discreet design to avoid any landscape disturbance or unwanted human interaction, data monitoring via our reporting platform allowing an analysis of transit flows in delayed time. Technical support, including the provision of tools for exporting and exploiting data. Post-installation assistance, in particular for managing access to data and training teams to use the platform. Thanks to this service, SMAD was able to obtain reliable figures, allowing it to confirm that access to the site did not require specific restrictions, thus avoiding additional development costs.

Essential Data to Assess the Impact on Local Wildlife

As part of the management of a major pathway through a sensitive natural area, the objective was to evaluate the potential impact of human traffic on local wildlife. The key challenge was to determine whether access restrictions were necessary to protect the ecosystem.

The installation of a Kiomda counting device enabled the collection of precise visitor data, providing a quantifiable basis for decision-making.

"We needed reliable data to determine if access restrictions should be implemented to minimize the impact on local wildlife."

A Decision-Making Tool to Optimize Investments

The collected data revealed that site attendance remained moderate, meaning that restrictive measures were unnecessary. This analysis helped avoid unnecessary investments while maintaining public access to the area.

"The data helped us understand that restricting access to the sensitive area was not necessary—allowing us to save on infrastructure costs."

The information is used internally by management teams, without direct communication to local officials, and is integrated into analysis reports to facilitate site management.

Optimized Monitoring with New Reporting Features

Since January 2024, accessing data via smartphone had been challenging. However, following updates to access permissions and the discovery of the new reporting tool reports.kiomda.com, satisfaction has improved.

"I am very satisfied with the ability to export the data for further analysis."

Future Prospects and Potential Needs for Additional Counters

The SMAD, which manages the site, oversees several marinas, hiking trails, and beaches. In the future, the organization may consider equipping additional sites, though budget constraints and counter placement logistics remain under review.

"We may have potential needs for new counters in the coming months or years, particularly for beaches and hiking trails."

To test feasibility at a lower cost, a short- or medium-term rental solution was proposed before committing to a full investment. This approach would help determine the optimal number of counters needed and their ideal placement.

"We are interested in the idea, but we need more time to consider it. We’ll get back to Kiomda if we decide to proceed."

Identified Areas for Improvement & User Feedback

The client highlighted several areas for improvement, including:

Precise geolocation of counters on a map for improved monitoring.
Photos of installed counters to enhance documentation of equipped sites.

Despite these suggestions, the technical support and customer service were highly appreciated, particularly for the quick resolution of data access issues.
